Well, the original ratgdo project is itself open source, hence the ESPHome fork. However the board design was closed source, so this repo is really just open source board designs either for using modules (like the Wemos D1 Mini or the ESP 32 WROOM), or using a bare ESP8266. I built a custom GDO before rat was available and while it's at or near feature parity with the ratGDO it also costs 3 times more and is more difficult to get setup. ratGDO is the least expensive, easiest to install, and most feature rich solution available.
